Pen and Pigment is a wireframe for an online boutique of artists who produce handmade, limited edition clothing and prints. It showcases who the artists are and the process of creating the goods. Pen & Pigment comes from the idea that, as the world becomes more conscious of who is making their goods and how, limited edition goods associated to faces and names will be in higher demand than factory-made anonymous goods. The wide variety of products required an easy-to-navigate layout along with a great display. It was important to bring focus to the artists and their goods, drive users to interact with the artists and improve upon the traditional e-commerce build.
High Fidelity Rapid Prototyping
A number of case studies, from Etsy's MVP to luxury boutiques and collective shops, established that a mix of broad categorization and beautiful imagery would be best to sell the items.
A database of the items and their taxonomy was compiled to determine how many categories would be best for the shop and how to sort the views in a responsive gallery. The artist page is a deviation from the standard item display format in order to highlight the artist's process, custom pieces, as well as available goods. After designing the prototype, breakpoints were established for a responsive design when the site is ready to be coded together, in order to make the store easy to view on mobile or desktop.
